God told somebody (maybe Jacob) that his descendents would be in the land of Egypt until the Canaanites had "filled their cup of iniquity." IOW, God was going to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites, but not until He had given the Canaanites every chance to repent. Also, the land of Goshen was a good place for the Hebrews because it was large and fertile; and because they were shepherds, the Egyptians left them alone for a long time. They multiplied and became a very large nation, which is what I think it meant when it said a great nation. I don't think they did anything bad to become slaves; the Egyptians just wanted to keep them down. I do believe God used this for His own purposes in bringing them out of Egypt in a mighty way, so that the whole middle-eastern world at the time knew about it and heard about the power of the one true God.
