I know a gal whose ds was struggling a bit. She took his favorite read aloud, a book on cowboys and Indians, and typed up a summary using simple words to help him. He wanted to read it so badly (even though he'd heard the read-aloud many times) he learned to read.

No graphics. No pictures. Nothing to color. Just a little homemade book his mama typed it. That's what lit the fire in him. Not that you have oodles of time to do this, but I had to tell you that story. :)
