a 5-paragraph essay-- I think the student only gets 25 minutes-- and there is no requirement for 5 paragraphs. That said, the SAT wants the same structure (intro, body with support, conclusion) which is very easy in a 5 paragraph essay. I don't think a student penalized if it happens to be 5 paragraphs, but it would be more important to finish than to make it 5 paragraphs.
